Rae's job description is Surf Photographer, Lifestyle Photographer, Ocean Photographer, Landscape Photographer. Rae is 28 years young and draws inspiration from the ocean, the earth and the surfing culture to express to you the viewer, beauty, spirituality and freedom. Her photographs reflect this special way of life for so many within her community.
Leaving TAFE in 2004 with a Diploma in Photography, it was over a year before she began taking photographs again but as her passion for surfing and travelling grew so did the desire to capture this lifestyle that she loves so much.
"Surf Lifestyle Photography has become a way for me to step away from the material world and focus purely on the light all around me, doing so allows the light within me to shine even brighter. May you feel a sense of this light and wonder in the world just by looking at my images."
Do you surf and how long?
I love to surf and have been doing so since I was about 19.. I learnt while I was in high school but living so far from the beach made it difficult to keep up with. It wasn't until I was sitting on the beach watching my boyfriend at the time surf on a hot beautiful day down in Dunsborough that I decided enough was enough! I literally went from the beach to the surf shop and bought my first board! A second hand 7 foot "Short board". From there I surfed with a few friends but they didn't stick at it... I often found myself down at the beach on my own. That was until I found an all girls surf club in Perth where I made some of the best friends I've ever had and was encouraged and inspired to keep learning. Yew!
Creative people are often drawn to different mediums, what was it about photography that inspired you to chose a camera to express yourself?
I don't know why.. Ever since I stepped into the dark room on my orientation day at high school I knew that I wanted to be a photographer. I loved the magic of seeing a photograph slowly appear on a blank piece of paper.
I love being able to capture a moment in time through my eyes... capture the feeling and I hope that other people get to experience that moment by looking at the photograph. I think I live a pretty blessed life so to be able to share what I see with people over the world is a pretty cool thing..
How long have you been a photographer?
Straight from high school I went to TAFE for three years... I put down the camera for a few years after that. Over load!! I didn't want to be told what to do or have the pressure on me that I'd felt during my studies.. Then I found the love of it again and haven't stopped.. I've had Blue Element Photography for about 5 years and Rae Marie Photography for nearly 3...
