Women Of The Waves on Surf Sister

A special function celebrating the contribution of women to surfing culture is being held at Surf World Gold Coast on Thursday, 15 September from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.

The “women of the waves” night will showcase “surf-employed” women in the fields of art, photography and fashion design.

Featured presenters include photographer Shelli Bankier, artist Jenny Midson (nee Brymer) and fashion designers Ali Mandalis and Shannon Clynes (owners of the Tallow brand). The night will also include music from Sydney-based vocalist Sez Fenn, with beach report presenter Liz Cantor the master of ceremonies.

“It’s a celebration of women’s surfing showcasing photography, art and design. We are delighted to have such a group of creative women who are all united by their love of the waves,” said Surf World Gold Coast treasurer Jak Carroll.

“The contribution of women to surfing culture is often overlooked and this night is about acknowledging the important role of female surfers.”

Jenny Midson (nee Brymer) paints retro beach island surf art for lovers of the tropics, waves, island girls and modern art.  She has surfed on the Gold Coast since she was a teenager, lived in Bali  and her work can be found in collections across Australia, Hawaii & Bali -  even Occy, Steffi Gilmore and Joel Parkinson have some of her work!

Shelli Bankier is a freelance photographer specialising in surf and ocean photography. She travelled widely around the world on a yacht while growing up and has taken photographs of surfing action and the ocean in locations such as Hawaii, Tahiti, New Caledonia and South Africa.

Ali Mandalis and Shannon Clynes are the free spirits that created Tallow, a brand that embraces the exquisiteness, grace and vitality of female surfing. Their product is a unique collection of swimwear,  wetsuits, apparel and accessories and their artwork is commissioned by an eclectic stable of local and international artists.

Tickets may be pre-purchased for $10 from Surf World Gold Coast or purchased on the night for $15. The ticket price includes a complimentary glass of champagne and appetizers.
