‘Broken Buckets’ – 2013 Byron Bay Surf Festival Short Film Comp is Go For Launch!
Byron Bay has always been a Mecca for surfing. In the late ‘60s, George Greenough, Bob McTavish and Nat Young were among those pioneering the region and innovating a completely new form of surfing. Their testing ground for shorter boards and their tube-riding skills was Broken Head, a destination Nat said had perfect waves, with barrels shaped “like broken buckets”.

Surfing films don’t always hit the mark. Particularly when Hollywood has a go and litters the narrative with cringe worthy cliches and over acting. However a surfing themed film generally lures us to the cinema as we identify with our tribe. Otelo Burning is a South African film set in the 1980′s during the volatile and bloody apartheid period.

Tatiana Velasco is the Director and Producer of REBEL WALTZ FILMS based in Lennox Head. I meet up with her at Marius cafe to find out more about the women who is responsible for creating ‘El Mar, Mi Alma’. The film paints a picture of Chile’s beauty and association with the sea, centered around the affectionate and intimate act of surfing. From the backdrop of an environmental campaign, with environmental themes and political undercurrent.
