Taylor grew up in a surfing family in the hills behind Byron Bay where the bush drew stark contrast to the coast. Fresh air, clean water and pure people formed her childhood years and in later years the trend continued in fortunate world travel, sports and studies. Taylor completed an honours thesis about Italian surfing culture at the University of Sydney in 2011 and is currently on the editorial collective of Kurungabaa, ‘a journal of history, literature and ideas from the sea’.

Hawaiian Princess Victoria Ka`iulani (1875-1899)
Ka‘iulani became known throughout the world for her intelligence, beauty and determination. During the overthrow of her kingdom in 1893, she spearheaded a campaign to restore the monarchy. As history shows ‘white people’ have integrated there sickness, values and culture upon the native Hawaiian people, threatening their cruisey island way of life.

Jericho Poppler is a champion woman surfer from the seventies, raised in Long Beach California, considered ballet and jazz her passions. She danced for years prior to getting into surfing which contributed to her graceful surfing style. Jericho dominated the surfing scene with a decade of championship titles from all over the world. This helped her earn her own "Jericho Poppler" model surfboard with world famous shaper Robert August.

Its HOT, the sun shone and the waves broke. Being Monday the streets of the Roxy and Quiksilver Pro where a little quieter today compared to the weekend frenzy of fans trying to catch a glimpse of their favourite surfers. But the morning was young and I was off the the media room to hook up with Cassandra Nevin, our SurfSister presenter, as well as apply sunscreen and get my fluids up before entering the media 'ring of fire'.

Paige Hareb is world number 10 women's surfer in the world and here's the shock. She's not from the US, Australia, Hawaii or Europe, South America Africa or Asia. Brace yourselves people. It's that awesome little island nation in the Pacific called New Zealand. Paige surfs brilliantly and is a great person as well. It's almost enough to want to claim her as Australian! We'll try anyway...
