Ok, so we gathered up a mixture of different souls and headed to 'Evans Head Surf Shack' for a long weekend of surf madness! Evans Head is a sub tropical hidden treasure that is widely undiscovered, comparable to Byron Bay but without the masses of people, you can surf whilst enjoying the long stretches of uncrowded pristine sandy beaches, rainforest, heathland, lagoons and an abundance of wildlife. As well as enjoying creature comfits such as a hot shower, comfy bed, machine coffee and the pub is within walking distance.
John Plenkovich, aka 'Plenko' is the host of Evans Head Surf Shack where he offers daily learn to surf lessons or tours (depending on your level of surfing). Plenko had us actively involved in everything from daily fitness and yoga sessions to kayaking, waterfall, wildlife and Tea-tree lake tours. You can even go deep sea fishing if your feeling adventurous with the option of fishing straight off our back yard into the river. The Surf Shack literally backs on to the Evans Head river!
There is a huge range of waves on offer in the Evans area, with surf spots catering to beginners through to advanced levels. A high light was being able to check the surf without leaving the house. Plenko pulled the ski out so we could 'have a go' at tow surfing, which was harder than it looks! After some great waves we finished off each day with a fresh seafood BBQ relaxing around the fire pit and laughing about the days events, with many interesting tales being shared around the fire. Heading off to bed feeling like your part of the Surf Shacks happy surfing family.
