Bali Polaroid

"I shot this series on expired 80's series polaroid film from the stash I collected when Polaroid closed down.  Its my favourite film and this is the last of it so I wanted to use it somewhere special and Bali seemed like the perfect choice.

I deliberately over exposed and shot in the middle of the day to get a really pale washed out feel .. I wanted to capture that midday island feeling when the bright sunshine blurs the definitions between colours and its hard to see where the ocean meets the sky.

The polaroids follow the hot pink fish surfboard around Bali in Balangan, Uluwatu and Bingin and then to my favourite island of Nusa Lembongan

Using polaroid cameras when you travel can seem like a bit of a faff, they take up alot of space in your hand luggage alongside the packets of film and nearly always delay you at customs! But I like how they slow down the process of photography, and make you think about each image so as not to waste it.  You also inevitably have to pause, to let an image develop or safely stow it away, and pausing is a good thing when you travel. For me it just feels like more of a creative process than the quick click of my 5D."

I am a photographer based in the UK but a bit of a nomad at heart. I've been documenting women's surfing for a few years now, my first love is analog and I always have a quiver of old medium format & polaroid cameras in my hand luggage. I'm a contributing writer and photographer at Surfgirl Magazine and besides my photography work I also run a surf travel company which takes me to some of the worlds most beautiful surf locations for inspiration.
