It's not just the financial climate putting us off shopping this winter. Arctic temperatures make it hard enough to get out of bed in the morning and the thought of contemplating gale force winds puts me right off that designer sale.

Having already made a true spectacle of myself fumbling around with non-functional umbrellas, notions of a glamorous Nordic Shopping Expedition are about as realistic as cutting out chocolate.

Anyway, why go out when it can come to you?

Online shopping is no new thing but the availability and price offered by online shopping today is enough to put fear in any retailer's eye. Top designer brands can be found at a fraction of the price, and often lust-worthy items not available in store are but a few clicks away!

Accessories are a great way to update your style unlike the risk of receiving the wrong size swimsuit or ill-fitting jeans. Wayfarer sunglasses and other retro styles are looking super-affordable this time of year, and still an essential part of your winter wardrobe (particularly after a late night). Shapes and frames suit different face shapes, so do a little research before deciding on which shape suits you.

This season the cat's-eye shape has taken off completely. Following the popularity of the rockabilly trend and all-things-Americana, the cat's eye has been adapted to sunglasses and spectacles alike. From flirty and feminine, to classic retro shapes and more androgynous styles, this look flatters most faces and is a fun way to work a retro look without looking like you stepped out off the set of Mad Men.

The other major style, having spent some time in the limelight now, is the geek-chic frame. Geeks are hotter than ever this year, with the hipster revolution leaving few and far between when it comes to dominating mainstream fashion. Many of these styles don’t offer great UV protection, so take this into consideration when getting your geek on.

For those looking for a little more purpose than looking too-cool-for-school, the cringe-inducing sporty shades of yesteryear have evolved into something a little more stylish and refined. They offer the best protection from those dangerous rays whilst keeping active – particularly in the snow where the glare from the snow will leave you dreaming of asprin not Aspen.

When it comes to online shopping, be wary of any deals that seem too-good-to-be-true. Particularly with designer brands, look for well reputed websites and only give credit card details over a secure connection.
