ASP Women’s Star Events
PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Thursday, September 15, 2011) – Today saw the ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Women’s Pro commence with two full rounds of competition completed with outstanding performances from the strong international field in tough 3-5ft waves at the main peak of Pantin. The men’s ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro was held off for the day allowing the stage to be passed on to the women’s contest.
Erica Hosseini (Newport Beach, CA) 24, tore into a peeling left with a strong forehand snap followed by a critical floater to pass the section and destroy the inside bowl to claim a near perfect 9.03 out of 10, the highest single wave of the event.
“Right now I am favouring my forehand and I don’t like battling it out with other competitors so if I can sneak in one or two before they all moved over. That was my initial game plan and I am stoked that it worked for me. I knew I had to get a second wave quick and as I saw all the colours coming over I knew it was game on.”
Hosseini, current ASP Star tour ranked nº39, built her game plan following instructions from her mother to get an edge on her competitors as the high tide push started to improve the southern peak. After her excellent start, Hosseini found another quick back up to control the remainder of the encounter and advance through to round Three.
“My plan was to sit on the left and my mum said to me ‘just hit it hard’ and my first wave was a 9 and I am sure my mum was filming it with shaky hands. I am so stoked. I brought her along for the two 6-Star events and then we are heading to the October Fest in between so it should be a lot of fun.”
Cannelle Bulard (St Leu, REU) 17, survived a stacked heat to finish in first place and advance along with experienced campaigner Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS). Bulard also went looking for lefts to favour her forehand however had to be content with the rights pulsing through which she ripped into with delight. Current European rankings leader, Bulard has kept her title hopes alive to further her chances after narrowly missing out on this year’s European Junior title.
“I didn’t go over to the same spot as the other girls because I was looking for the lefts but only rights came through. It was okay for me on my backhand and I caught my first two waves which were good and then it was really difficult and I didn’t get any higher scores.
Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA) 19, defending event champion and nº1 on the ASP Star tour rankings, held two solid performances in the tough conditions by building on her scores at the same time as monitoring the positioning and scores of her competitors. Laying powerful turns on both her forehand and backhand, Conlogue secured an 8.17 out of 10 and a quick backup to claim a two-wave heat total of 16.00 out of 20 and showed she is determined to win back-to-back titles in Pantin.
“I was just going into it as if it was another contest and try and get my feet wet and get used to the conditions right now. It was definitely a little tricky out there but if you caught the right ones you were going to drop the 8’s easy so it was a matter of finding the right waves and not getting too deep.”
Swell conditions are expected to build over the remaining days of the official waiting period and Conlogue is looking forward to the action despite the threat of fog blowing in during this afternoon.
“There is definitely some nice swell at the moment and I am stoked about that and it looks like we are going to have swell for the rest of the contest. We won’t have to go on hold for waves but for fog!! (laughs) I am really looking forward to the next round and the rest of the week.”
The men’s ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro was held off today to allow the women to take full stage and enjoy the fun conditions under clear blue skies and warm temperatures. Both men and women’s events are scheduled to recommence tomorrow morning.
